What was reported

On December [XXX], 2023 at 3:51 PM PT a Waymo Autonomous Vehicle (Waymo AV) operating in Scottsdale, Arizona was in a collision involving a van on [XXX] at [XXX]. The Waymo AV was stopped for a red light in a dedicated left turn lane on southbound [XXX] at [XXX], preparing to make a left turn onto eastbound [XXX]. At this intersection, this traffic light had four bulbs, with the bottom-most bulb being both a green and yellow bulb for a protected left sequence. When the bottom bulb turned green for a protected left, the two vehicles in front of the Waymo AV proceeded, and as the Waymo AV approached, the traffic light began to change sequence to become an unprotected left turn, with the green arrow bulb turning to a yellow arrow. The Waymo AV braked and came to a stop past the crosswalk, but before entering the intersection (as defined in Arizona). As the Waymo AV came to a stop, a van approached from behind and made contact with the rear of the Waymo AV. At the time of the impact, the Waymo AVs Level 4 ADS was engaged in autonomous mode. Both vehicles sustained damage, and the passenger in the Waymo AV reported a minor injury. Waymo is reporting this crash under Request No. 1 of Standing General Order 2021-01 because a vehicle involved was towed away.
