Report narrative
What was reported
On August [XXX], 2024 at 2:21 PM MT a Waymo Autonomous Vehicle ("Waymo AV") operating in Phoenix, Arizona was in a collision involving an SUV in a parking lot near [XXX] and [XXX]. The Waymo AV was stopped in a parking lot of an apartment complex when the Waymo AV rider opened the rear driver side door as an SUV was passing to the left side of the Waymo AV. The Waymo AV's rear driver door made contact with the front and rear passenger doors of the SUV. The passenger in the Waymo AV unbuckled their seatbelt shortly before the moment of impact, likely because the AV was at its dropoff location and the passenger was preparing to exit. At the time of the impact, the Waymo AV's Level 4 ADS was engaged in autonomous mode. Both vehicles sustained damage. Waymo is reporting this crash under Request No. 1 of Standing General Order 2021-01 because a vehicle involved was towed away. Waymo may supplement or correct its reporting with additional information as it may become available.
