What was reported

This is an update to report [XXX], originally submitted on October [XXX], 2024. Since submission, Waymo became aware that the conditions resulting in the AV coming to a stop prior to the collision differed from what was originally described. An updated narrative follows below. On September 26, 2024 at 11:27 PM PT a Waymo Autonomous Vehicle ("Waymo AV") operating in San Francisco, California was in a collision involving a passenger car on [XXX] at [XXX]. The Waymo AV was traveling northeastbound on [XXX] when it encountered a stationary garbage truck in the dedicated right turn lane at [XXX]. The AV maneuvered to the left of the garbage truck and into the through lane and continued on [XXX] onto a segment of the road where private vehicle traffic is restricted. The Waymo AV continued traveling on [XXX], where no turns are permitted, and came to a stop at the intersection at [XXX] because the intersection was excluded from the available area for Waymo AV traversal due to the private vehicle restriction. While the Waymo AV remained stopped with its hazards on, a passenger car traveling northeast on [XXX] passed by the Waymo AV. As the passenger car passed by Waymo AV, the passenger side of the passenger car made contact with the rear driver side of the Waymo AV. At the time of the impact, the Waymo AV's Level 4 ADS was engaged in autonomous mode. The Waymo AV sustained damage. Waymo is reporting this crash under Request No. 2 of Standing General Order 2021-01. Waymo may supplement or correct its reporting with additional information as it may become available.
