What was reported

On October [XXX], 2024 at 8:45 PM PT a Waymo Autonomous Vehicle (Waymo AV) operating in San Francisco, California was in a collision involving a passenger car on [XXX] near [XXX]. The Waymo AV was traveling north on [XXX] behind a passenger car that was traveling in the same direction. The passenger car then began to slow and, with its reverse lights illuminated, abruptly began to reverse. The Waymo AV activated its horn as it came to a complete stop to yield to the passenger car. As the passenger car was reversing at a high rate of speed, the Waymo AV briefly reversed before coming to another complete stop. The rear of the passenger car then made contact with the front of the stopped Waymo AV. The Waymo AV reversed for a second time before the passenger car continued reversing and made contact with the front of the Waymo AV again. The passenger car then proceeded straight on [XXX]. At the time of the impact, the Waymo AVs Level 4 ADS was engaged in autonomous mode. Both vehicles sustained damage and the passenger car left the scene. Waymo is reporting this crash under Request No. 2 of Standing General Order 2021-01. Waymo may supplement or correct its reporting with additional information as it may become available.
